Wood logs burning brightly inside a dark brick firebox

Wood and gas

Every kind of fire, kept dry.

Puget Sound homes burn wood in old brick fireplaces, stoves and inserts, and gas in newer homes and conversions. Whatever you have, the chimney above it lives in the rain.

iMasonry wood fireplaceBrick firebox and flue, common in older Seattle and Tacoma homes. Needs sweeping, a working damper and a dry crown.
iiWood stove or insertCommon for real heat in a cool, damp climate. Builds creosote and needs its liner or pipe cleaned every season.
iiiGas fireplace or insertGlass-front direct-vent units and gas logs. Needs a yearly check of the pilot, burner, glass seal and vent.
ivFactory-built fireplaceA metal chimney inside a framed chase, common in newer homes. The chase cover on top is what keeps the rain out.

Chimney sweeping

Masonry

From one loose brick to a new stack.

From Craftsman bungalows and Seattle boxes to newer homes with metal chases, chimneys fail from the top down. We repair what can be saved and rebuild what can't.

Why Seattle chimneys fail

Rain, moss and the next quake.

What we fix most across the Puget Sound.

Rain

the number one cause of chimney damage here

Water gets in through cracked crowns, missing caps and tired flashing, and moss holds it against the brick. Chimney leak repair

Quakes

old brick chimneys crack and loosen

Unreinforced brick above the roofline is the part of a house most likely to be damaged in an earthquake. Earthquake chimney repair

Burn bans

wood smoke is restricted on bad-air days

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency calls burn bans when the air is poor. Gas fireplaces and some certified units are treated differently. Burn-ban ready upgrades

Burn bans

Keep the fire on bad-air days.

During a Puget Sound burn ban, an open wood fireplace usually has to stay cold. Gas logs, a gas insert or a certified wood insert can change what you're allowed to use. We check what fits your fireplace at the free inspection.

FAQ

Questions

Do you charge for the inspection?

No. The inspection is free. We check the fireplace and chimney from the roof and from inside, take photos, and write down the price of anything that needs doing before any work starts. Cleanings are priced at that visit too.

Why does my chimney leak when it rains?

Usually because water gets past the top of the chimney: a cracked crown, a missing or rusted cap, or worn flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Moss on the brick holds water against it. We find where it gets in at the free inspection and photograph it.

Is my old brick chimney an earthquake risk?

Unreinforced brick above the roofline is one of the parts of a house most often damaged in earthquakes. We check for cracks, loose brick and a shifted top at the free inspection and tell you what we find, with photos.

Can I use my fireplace during a burn ban?

It depends on the ban and on what you burn. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency calls burn bans when the air is poor, and wood burning is restricted during them. Check the agency's current status before you light a wood fire. Gas fireplaces are treated differently.

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

NFPA 211, the national standard, calls for an inspection at least once a year and cleaning when needed. Wood stoves and inserts used all winter often need more than one cleaning a season.

Do you work on gas fireplaces?

Yes. We service and repair gas fireplaces and inserts, install gas logs and gas inserts, and convert wood fireplaces to gas.
